Yelp & TripAdvisor Reviews: Hospitality Trust That Books Tables

Reviews for restaurants, hotels and travel: beating Yelp filters, TripAdvisor ranking math and photo reviews that sell rooms.
Yelp filters harder than anyone
Yelp hides 20–30% of reviews in 'not recommended' — short texts, new accounts and review bursts vanish first. Only established-looking reviewers with detail survive.
Order of operations: fix the listing (photos, hours, menu link), collect 20+ organic reviews, then top up velocity. Yelp punishes empty listings that suddenly get 50 reviews.
TripAdvisor ranking math
Recency dominates: a review from last week outweighs five from last year. Travelers filter by 'traveler rating' first, then read the worst reviews — one detailed 2-star with an owner reply converts better than silence.
Photo reviews carry 3x weight for hotels and restaurants. Guests photograph rooms and dishes anyway; ask them to upload, not just to rate.
The reply playbook
Thank every 4–5 star briefly and specifically. Answer 1–3 stars with facts, a fix and a direct contact — never argue. Future guests read replies as a preview of your service.
Track rating weekly, not daily. A 0.2-star slide over a quarter is the early warning; bursts of 5-stars overnight are the filter trigger.
