Hashtags in 2025: Small Sets, Searchable Captions, Zero Spam

30 hashtags are dead. The 3–5 tag system, keyword captions, and niche tags that still drive discovery.
What changed
Discovery moved to interest graphs, audio indexing and keyword search — hashtags are now a weak secondary signal, not a lever. Mass-tagging 30 generic tags signals spam to filters and humans alike.
The data pattern: 3–5 precise tags perform at parity or better than 30, with cleaner audience and fewer bot followers attracted.
The tag stack
One broad niche tag (100k–1M posts), two mid tags (10k–100k), one micro tag under 10k you can actually top, one branded tag you own. Rotate sets per post pillar — identical blocks on every post look automated.
Put real effort into the caption's first line and spoken keywords instead: search surfaces posts by words, and words compound while tags decay.
Platform differences
TikTok: 3–4 tags max, trending sounds matter 10x more. Instagram: tags help Reels categorization mildly. YouTube: tags nearly irrelevant, titles and descriptions rule.
Test tag sets for two weeks each and compare non-follower reach in analytics — then stop thinking about hashtags and make better hooks, backed by views that test hooks fairly.
